You’ve thought about it for months and fallen in love with your outlines. You've tried to create a writing schedule and stick to it, but when it comes time to finally put butt-in-chair and write the darn thing, your mind starts racing…
“Maybe I should grab another coffee first…”
“I should research all of the things…”
“OH! I should put in a load of laundry while I have time!”
“Maybe my writing isn’t good enough. Ugh. I feel like giving up.”
Enough is enough, my friend: You know your author dreams will not die. So, let’s get focused and FINISH the book that has been trapped inside of you for a lifetime.
If you're ready for that Real Writer seal of approval...
You are ALREADY a “real” writer now... But once you have your first book out in the world, your “hobby” is suddenly seen as legit to non-writers. When people introduce you, they start to say “She’s the author of [insert your work-in-progress title here!]”
And you get to sit back and watch their face light up with respect and admiration.
If you long to feel the excitement of seeing your book out in the wild...
You walk into your local bookstore and there on the “New Releases” table is your book. (Be a good author and sign a few for the bookstore owner, would you?) Or, you’re doing some research on your next book at the library and right there in front of you someone is checking it out. Your book in the hands of readers!
If you're ready to feel the pride that comes from living a true “writer's life...”
Imagine finally being able to live up to the promise you made to yourself when you were just a little girl reading with a flashlight under the covers and couldn’t get enough of a good book. Imagine waking up each day, knowing that your primary task for that day is to be as creative and open-minded as possible… because YOU ARE A WRITER.
If you're longing for the pleasure of artistic growth and mastery of your craft...
You want to take pride in and have real affection for your writing and no longer worry about turning out “crappy first drafts” because you know you have the skills needed to turn those drafts into complete works of art that your readers will LOVE.
If you want hands-on support and accountability from an award-winning author and experienced writing coach.
You need accountability and guidance from someone who’s been-there-done-that and can give you clear steps to follow as you finish your book and connect with your readers.
If you nodded YES to any of the above, then the First Book Finish experience is custom-designed for you!
Perhaps in your most courageous moments you’ve made the commitment to yourself that this is the year you’ll definitely finish your book.
You’ve bought a pretty new notebook (plus a spare!) and stocked up on a set of those easy-glide gel pens.
Maybe you’ve even said you’ll get up early and write every day before the kids woke up and your house went into overdrive, or you had to leave for work.
But even with the best intentions, most writers end up abandoning their half-written manuscripts in a drawer or box in the closet, while watching others push through to the finish line, find agents, publish and be celebrated for their brilliant work.
They haven't figured out how to make the time to finish fit into their specific personal circumstances.
Even when they find the time, they're scattered and distracted, without the skills to find focus and manage NORMAL creative anxiety.
Self-doubt creeps in and they tell themselves that they’ll write again next week. But then life gets in the way and next week never comes.
They’re not sure their writing is “good enough” or that it’s worth it. (Spoiler alert: it’s 100% worth it!)
They feel all alone with the demands of writing their book, and overwhelmed at the enormity of their specific project.
They don’t know what comes next after the first draft, and freeze up when it comes time to revise, publish or promote their book.
They get super-anxious when they lack clarity over exactly what they need to do next to finish their manuscripts, depending on the phase of the book process they’re in.
They've bought no less than 101 books and courses on outlining, the craft of writing, landing an agent, self-publishing, how to write a bestseller, and more. But they still have no book to show for it.
Most writers get concerned about creating the perfect narrative arc, or getting the setting concrete enough, ensuring movement in their character development, or perfecting each story or chapter.
And of course all of these things matter, but they’re not where we get stuck.
Writers get stuck when they don’t acknowledge that 80% of completing a book is in our mental effort to manage ourselves.
In my own experience as a writer and as a writing mentor, writers know deep down that the only thing really in our way is ourselves and our own thought patterns.
If you’ve ever grasped for the right words or the next scene -- congratulations on being a normal writer! There’s inherent uncertainty in the creative process that breeds anxiety in all artists.
We have to pay attention to how this manifests for us personally -- our own peculiar quirks -- and come up with plans to manage it.
Fortunately, we now have brain science and the science of creativity (yep, there are real scientists studying this stuff, bless them!) to show us how we can effectively respond when caught up in our writer’s fears and struggles.
But no one is born knowing all of this and it's not taught in most writing programs, including in graduate programs like the MFA.
You need what all writers need when they really want to finish: inspiration, practical support and accountability from someone who really believes in you and cares that you finally finish your book.
You need clear step-by-step guidance through ALL the phases of finishing a book: drafting, revising, publishing and promoting.
Introducing
This isn't just another writing course. It's a small group coaching experience guiding you through the complete author cycle.
You get support tailored to where you are in the process: drafting, revision, feedback, publishing, and promotion.
It changed my life and it changed my writing life because it gave me the tools that I needed to create a sustainable, pleasurable writing practice, one that kept me energized and focused. I can't speak the praises of the program highly enough because it gave me what I needed to finish the project and also lessons that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life and for my career.
This writing program dismantles the emotional baggage and poor writing habits that are keeping you from finishing (or even starting) your manuscript."
I’ve taken everything I’ve learned from my MFA in Creative Writing, my years mentoring writers, and my veteran experience in finishing and publishing award-winning books as a working single mother... and channeled it all into a comprehensive book completion program.
This is the program that not only teaches you the mental and technical tools you’ll need to finish your book, but also provides the book coaching and loving accountability you’ll need to help you get there.
The end result: a finished draft that works, a proven step-by-step process to help you revise, guidance and resources on to publish, and the skills you need to build your author platform.
Oh, and did I mention the long-lasting increased confidence that comes from mastering your writing mind? Because that’s what gets you finishing the next book and the next!
Shows you how to fight the very specific and personal fears that are getting in the way of you completing your first draft.
Provides the loving accountability to help you get to the finish line with a revised book ready for publication.
Teaches you the sneaky ways that fear and self-doubt manifest themselves in your life and provides proven, science-backed tools to develop long-lasting responses that will sustain you in your writing life for years to come.
Supports you to problem-solve and plan around your specific Real Life realities to make your writing sessions happen, providing the guidance and support you need to craft a regular writing ritual that really works for you.
Teaches you the classic guiding principles for compelling narrative so that the sections of your book will slide into place AND supports you to integrate your beta reader feedback into your revision.

First Book Finish is a complete book-completion experience. Over our 12-months together, you’ll receive everything you need to complete your book and get it out into the world so that you can finally become the successful author you’ve always dreamed of being.
You'll have a book coach in your corner for an entire year! (But one who also helps with your publishing plan and book marketing — at a fraction of the investment!)
Our year together allows me to get to know you, your writing style, your life circumstances, your long-held book dreams, and – importantly – the needs of your specific book.
You’ll join Live Book Coaching calls that are tailored to exactly where you are in your process: Drafting, Revision, Publication & Promotion. During these calls, you’ll have all your questions answered, so you never have to feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next.
In addition, you’ll have access to the First Book Finish online course (valued at $997), with video lessons to guide you through every step of the book-completion process. Here’s how the online course breaks down…
We start with a complete 360 degree overview of the 6 Phases of a Book, so you can pinpoint precisely where you are in the process and what comes next for every writer.
We’ll do a deep dive together into the true nature of drafts (how rough is rough, exactly?) and uncover how to handle research and any shiny new ideas that bubble up. Focus is the name of the game!
Your Book Finish Blueprint will provide the guidance you need to track and celebrate your progress.
We’ll create a personalized book-completion project plan and find you more time to write (!) and develop new ways to avoid distractions so your writing sessions are truly productive.
This module draws on the work of social scientists studying creativity and exciting new developments in brain science that all writers can use to:
Achieve a productive Writer’s Mindset.
Choose optimal over perfect and finally beat your perfectionist tendencies.
Understand how self-doubt and self-sabotage are showing up in your life and the tools you can use to leave these behind.
Clear away the distractions that eat away at your focus.
Develop the skills needed to beat writer’s resistance every single time it shows up -- and how to ensure it doesn’t even bother to come around any more. Bye-bye writer’s block, bye-bye!
This course module is all about the nitty-gritty technical aspects of craft you'll need to finish your book.
All the classic structural guidance for narrative, plus a few new contemporary approaches so that you can find the best structural “container” for telling your particular story.
How to create believable characters who develop naturally and easily.
The Goldilocks approach to ensuring backstory doesn’t take over your story.
How to craft a setting so realistic your reader feels wet when you describe the rain!
How subplots work and how to handle these threads in the first draft.
How to write scenes that work, including what the heck a “beat” is.
And for short story writers and essayists, I’ll provide a proven process for curating a collection and pulling everything together into a compelling whole once the individual pieces are finished.
At this point in the programme, you'll be soooo close to finished, my friend! Here's where we get into:
Some super-useful tools for getting unstuck (break glass in case of emergency!)
What great endings look like and how to write one for your book.
How you’ll know when your first draft is ready and you can move on to revision.
The precise questions to ask beta readers in order to get some solid initial feedback on your book that you can actually use. (And in our Live Coaching Calls, I’ll help you do exactly that!)
My proven First Book Finish Revision Method, which will give you all of the tools you’ll need to develop your very own personal revision plan.
Congratulations: you have a finished book! But now what? No worries, I’ve got you! Here's where we get into:
How to Clarify Your Personal Publication Dream
Guidance on How to Choose Indie vs. Traditional Publishing
How to Find an Agent and Work with the Big 5 Publishing Houses
How to Find a Small-Press (or Literary) Publisher
How Self-Publishing (also known as Indie Publishing) Works
The Minimalist Marketing Approach to Building an Author's Platform
A complete set of resources, including step-by-step task lists and templates to save you time and overwhelm.
And because this isn’t just an online course, but a comprehensive book-completion experience, I’ll be with you to provide guidance and support every step of the way!
Even when you’re feeling anxious or aren’t sure what to do next, I’m your personal book coach and I’m in your corner every step of the way: from draft to revision, publication to promotion!

Finish your book and bring your author dreams to life!
How many pages do I need to have already written to qualify for the First Book Finish program?
There’s no specific minimum number of pages to qualify, and it’s okay if your pages are still handwritten notes -- we can work with that as you finish your draft.
What if I’ve tried to finish my book before but I just keep getting stuck? How do I know this program will really help?
I hear you! It’s totally 100% normal to get stuck at a specific spot in your manuscript and then not be able to get over it. This is why I’ve designed the program the way I have -- with a deep dive on the proven, science-backed mindset tools, so that we can eliminate them once and for all. (Not just for this book either; these are tools you can come back to any time you’re feeling stuck in your writing life for years to come.) I also provide a proven step-by-step revision method and clear guidance and resources for publication and promotion. Plus you have access to me as your book coach with Live Zoom calls.
My life is super busy -- do I have to be writing every single day to make this work? How much time do I really need to invest in order to finish my book?
I don’t believe in the lie that “real writers” write every day. It just hasn’t been my experience and I’ve got the published books and a few literary awards to support my fairly strong opinion on this. 😄 However, with that said of course you’ll need to be writing regularly in order to finish your book. That’s why right at the start of our time together, I will walk you through the Book Finish Blueprint to help you break down your personal writing project, and we make a plan for how you’re going to find the time you need that is entirely based on your specific Real Life circumstances. Can you find time to write 1-3 times a week? That’s totally doable and inside First Book Finish, I show you how to make it happen.
How does the online course part of things work exactly -- when do I get access to everything and for how long?
We dive into Module 1 together immediately. In our weekly sessions I’ll be referring to lessons in the online course so that we’re always on the same page, but you do the lessons on your own time. There are video, audio and print options so you can choose how you learn best. You have lifetime access to the course so anytime I make updates you get the new versions of everything too.
When do the Live Coaching Calls happen?
For Tier 1 and Tier 2, the Live Coaching calls happen every second Tuesday at 12pm Eastern.
For Tier 3, you will immediately join the call most relevant to where you are in your book-completion journey. Here’s the schedule:
Drafting: Monday afternoons at 12pm Eastern time.
Revising: Wednesday afternoons at 12pm Eastern.
Publishing and Promotion: Thursday afternoons at 12pm Eastern.
But you don’t have to worry about missing any, because you can submit questions in advance and then the sessions are recorded so you’ll be able to stream and/or download them (or even re-watch them again!) as you need them. I’ll provide a digital and printable calendar so you can’t miss a thing.
What if I join but it doesn't work for me?
The First Book Finish 30-Day Guarantee has your back. After 30 days, if you aren’t motivated by your personal Book Finish Blueprint and the loving accountability the program offers, then all you have to do is email rhonda@resilientwriters.com and I’ll refund 100% of your full program tuition. You can find the full details on the First Book Finish 30-Day Guarantee here.
Can’t I just take everything you’re saying here and do it on my own or with a few of my writing friends?
Yes, of course! But let’s be honest -- will you, though? I’ve been at this a long time and I know how hard it is to keep ourselves motivated to stick with our writing routines, never mind motivating others as well.
And I’ve designed this program to incorporate the latest in social science and brain research to help you understand what stands between you and the completion of your book, so that you can benefit from a set of practical and proven science-backed tools, as well as have the loving accountability of a coach and a group of fellow writers as you write to finish. I know there’s no other program like it available.
Will this program work for essayists or short story writers?(Is there anyone it wouldn’t work for?
Yes! For writers working on a collection of stories or essays, I have some special resources to help prompt you with new ideas for finishing individual pieces, as well as a guide to help you curate your collection once the individual pieces are finished, so that everything comes together as a compelling whole.
The program will work for anyone needing mindset and technical craft support as they’re working to finish a full first draft of their book. However, I don’t provide specific craft guidance for poets or playwrights.
I’m in! Can you remind me of everything I’m getting when I join today?
Sure thing 🙂

"HALLELUJAH: I FINALLY HAVE A BOOK!"
"I went to every live coaching session and I worked my whole schedule to do that. And they were really, really helpful. I was like: Hallelujah, it's been 10 years and I finally have a book! When I finished First Book Finish, I finally had a finished product and it actually made sense, it had structure, and a character arc, all of that. It was like: Oh, this is actually really good!”
First Book Finish Graduate: Mari Ruddy, best-selling and award-winning author of Extreme Healing: Reclaim Your Life and Learn to Love Your Body
"I LOVED ALL OF IT"
"If you have a desire to write but lack the motivation, time, discipline, or self-belief to do so, then I highly recommend taking the First Book Finish program. I loved all of it...the on-line content, the peer group, the weekly accountability updates, and mostly the personal commitment of Rhonda to journey with each of us and her mentoring, encouragement and wise advice."
First Book Finish Graduate: Helen Farrar [Memoir]
You’re a creative professional woman who started a book but then set it aside when life got in the way, and now you know you HAVE to finish.
You’ve got a Word file or Google doc filled with pages of writing for your book, but you dread going back into your draft because you feel overwhelmed.
You want to finish your book so badly but find yourself avoiding your writing sessions out of fear that you just won’t know if you’re going in the right direction or not.
You love the idea of the Muse but also want to know what science has to say that might help you out when the Muse isn’t cooperating.
You are 100% GOING TO FINISH this book, come hell or high water, and you’d like to have an experienced guide to support you along the way. When it comes to your writing life right now, you could really use some loving accountability and community.
You find yourself getting stuck as you’ve been working on your book, thinking things like “what’s the point?” or “who’s going to read this anyway?” and you know you need to reset your writers’ mindset on the regular in order to make it to the finish line.
When you let yourself imagine holding your finished book in your hands, the idea of it excites you SO MUCH you can barely stand it.
You’ve been dreaming about finishing your very own book ever since you were a little kid reading books under the bedcovers with a flashlight, and you’ve gotten started but now could just use a little push and someone to hold your hand through the process.
You’re ready to understand how books really work, what a complete book actually looks like, how to publish and promote it once it’s done, and you’re prepared to plan and track your writing progress on a weekly basis.
"For me, First Book Finish was nothing short of transformational - a perfect combination of the right program, the right time and a willing heart! I was not writing at all. I wasn't even thinking of writing! Since then I have completed my memoir, started another one, began editing a completed novel I'd put aside and started to build my author website. I am embracing my new life as a working writer, inspired by Rhonda's encouragement and teaching, the support of the community and everything I've learned."
12 months from now, where will you be and how much of your book will you have written if you continue to struggle through on your own?
Will you still be avoiding your writing sessions, worried that your writing just isn't good enough?
Will you be disappointed, knowing you didn't really commit to achieving your creative dreams?
If you're seeking permission to really believe that YES! You CAN do this: go ahead and give it to yourself.
I believe you can finish your book. There's no reward for doing it the hard way, but there is a whole set of practical tools and loving support for you here to help you finish, if that feels right for you.
If you're still reading this, I know you feel a strong call to finally finish your book and create a writing life you love this year. And it would be my privilege and delight to help you get there.
Whether you choose to join the program or not, please do borrow my belief in you and the importance of reaching for your writing dreams whenever your own belief could use a little boost.
I wish we could meet up in a bookstore café, but if you'd like to know a bit more about me...
I’m Rhonda Douglas, a published and award-winning writer. I have my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and have been a writing mentor for almost a decade -- offering live workshops, one-on-one editorial support and creativity coaching.
Supporting other writers brings me pure joy.
I have two published books out in the world, and a third on the way. I’m currently writing a historical mystery novel and a creative nonfiction book. I was the Poetry Editor for Arc Poetry, Canada’s National Poetry Magazine. Publishers Weekly said my short stories “bubble with originality and daring,” among other lovely things.
I would love to work with you over the next 12 months in the First Book Finish program. If you decide to join us, I'll be with you every step of the way and I couldn't be more excited to support you on your journey to a finished and published book.
Here's to your writing success! xo
Try First Book Finish -- it is worth the investment. It’s not just for this book - it can be applied to all writing in your life! Before taking First Book Finish, I was feeling: Guilt. Laziness. Fraudulent. Inexperienced. Now, I feel I am a writer. Boom!
